Astronauts’ trips into space grew longer and longer over the decades. With longer trips, space flight related degenerative diseases became more and more pronounced. Crews aboard orbiting space stations can lose upwards of 15% of muscle mass and 25% of their strength in roughly four months. Osteoporosis occurs at an accelerated rate. Upon return to Earth, astronauts can be prone to loss of agility, coordination, and stability. Amateur and professional athletes in many sports do resistance training to strengthen their bodies, usually for an hour daily, three to five times weekly. Not so for astronauts: when in space, NASA wants them doing resistance training six days per week, two hours for each day. NASA astronauts train to fight for their health and well being.
NASA training uses special machines to simulate free weight training. Unlike machines in gyms, free weights stimulate more of your body for coordination, stability, agility, and speed.
