Oil pulling therapy is a mild way to cleanse the body of toxins and great for improving oral health. It works by pulling the disease causing microbes in the mouth and combining them with the oil. The fatty membranes of the microbes are attracted to the oil like a magnet and can be expelled from the body by binding with the oil.

Use Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. Start with what feels comfortable for you and titrate up to 2 teaspoons of oil1 tsp = 5 ml

Try to oil pull in the morning, once a day, before brushing your teeth and before eating breakfast. It is best done on an empty stomach as some people may be a little nauseated at first but it will subside as you continue with the therapy. You may want to drink some water to help the mouth with saliva secretion. The mouth shouldn’t be completely full, as you will need space for saliva secretion.

Keep your lips closed and work the oil in your mouth, sucking, pushing, and pulling the oil through your teeth and your entire mouth. Try this for as long as you can, working your way up to 20 minutes each time. Try to do other tasks during this time. At first just do it as long as you can. The longer you pull, the more effective it is. The mixture will turn a milky white.

Do not gargle or swallow the mixture, as it will have bacteria in it. Spit the mixture into a trash receptacle so your sink doesn’t get clogged from the oil. Rinse your mouth out with water afterward to remove any residual oil. Your mouth and throat will probably feel very dry, so drink plenty of water.

It is normal for mucous to form in the back of the throat. If needed, spit out the oil and clear your throat. Take some more oil and continue to work up to 20 minutes.

Adding a few drops of peppermint oil to the coconut oil will improve the flavor and your breath as well as help with any nausea that may occur.
